Martin Luther King shook the nation from the Lincoln Monument

WASHINGTON D.C. - The nation witnessed probably the most emotive speech in their history. Luther King was very touching and precise with his words and ideas. He approached the crowd with eloquence and facility.

“I have a dream”. Four simple words stacked in the heads of every citizen of this nation. Martin Luther King this time has prepared a perfectly studied speech which was designated to remind us that freedom is something that everyone deserves. The public shouted out loud all their resentment against this segregation system in harmony with the words of Martin Luther.

It is impressive to appreciate the impact this speech had in the USA, and this happened because of the clever selection of topics and words by Martin Luther King. He, for example, uses in his speech powerful themes such as freedom and justice, themes that everyone can relate to and also want to reach. Freedom, a word which so much meaning for the USA, here we are proud of our courts, economy and democracy that are supposed to be the greatest expression of freedom in the world. But have we really reached real freedom? This is what Martin Luther King wants the citizens to thing while he speaks, how could we call our country “free” if equality does not exist? Is there a real justice in this country?

Also the way Martin portrays his feelings in the speech by talking about afroamerican segregation by his point of view. He talks about a certain dream a dream he has, a dream that he wants to someday achieve. Martin is positive when referring to segregation he believes in a future where every man in this country would be equal. A future of harmony.  A future we all hope.

Task 1

Racism has been a debatable topic throughout United States history. The first big event that involved afroamerican freedom was the Civil War, where afroamerican people won their "freedom”. But this freedom wasn’t total, segregation continuous to exist in the law and people of the United States. Here is where one man got over all and fought for their rights, and his name was Martin Luther King. From that moment in the early 60 until now equality in the United States is supposed to be guaranteed, but what would Martin Luther King have thought about racism now a days, is there a real freedom? Finally the world he dreamed is real?

Now a day maybe Martin would be proud of how the country has improve their justice cords and the society in general to become a more tolerant place. But he would know that it also can be better. It is right that from the time of Martin Luther King the government and the majority of the USA citizens had try to change the laws and stereotypes of afroamericans, and they have succeed, but they are not close to the dream of King. Racism is still present in the USA and is strong, stereotypes are hard to change, and some people still have repudiation towards afroamerican, this is shown with more than 50 parties across the United States that have declared they are racist. Also this is shown in the salary stats, where afroamericans are the ones with the lowest average.

"Duet"

Duet is a poem written by Alfred Lord Tennyson, who was the Laureate poet of Queen Victorian from 1850 until his death. If we go straight ahead to the title of this poem it immediately suggests that the course of the poem will be directed by two voices as lyric speakers who will probably agree on the theme they discuss or describe, because duets are supposed to be something agreeable, therefore the word “Duet” in the title also gives the impression of harmony and musicality. Also if we address the title we can infer that the “duet” is probably talking about love.

After reading the poem you can notice that the there are two different voices that act as the lyric speaker of the poem. These two voices are having a talk about love; while they discuss the provenance of a thing they call “the voice” through the description of the nature that surrounds them.

On the poem the author uses a wide range of selected words to embellish his verses and to give strong images that greatly add to the theme of the poem, like when he uses the word deep. This word refers firstly that love is a deep feeling of us, something that we all carefully hide in our deepest self. In the poem the word “voice” is something that Tennyson uses to represent the messages that our heart (love) tries to send to us and that sometimes we don’t like to hear it or maybe we just do not recognize as the voice of our heart. That is why the author usually combines these two words like in verse 2 and 6 where he says “the voice of the deep” doing a clear reference to what we commonly call the voice of the heart. In addition, it is necessary to highlight that Lord Tennyson uses the nature as the base of the image he is trying to express in his poem, shown in almost every verse of the poem like 2, 4, 6, 10, and others, this is because Tennyson in this poem tries to convey the literature movement of that age, which was Romanticism, a literary movement that combines the life and feelings of man with nature.

Addressing the attitude of the poem I feel that the tone of the poem is of ignorance and in contradiction understanding of love because in the poem the first voice (1) finishes his ideas always with a question mark as it is shown in verses 2, 8, and 12. This voice uses question mark because he represents the ignorance of love. While the other voice (2) answers the questions that voice (1) does, to finally at the end of the poem, unveil the mysteries of love.

Moving on to the shifts of the poem, there is only one in the whole poem, there is not a real change of topic or mood during the whole poem, the shift starts with voice (1) asking what was he hearing to voice (2), verse 1 and 2, then they tried to approach to discover what the “deep voice” (love) is and finally at the end of the poem the voices agree and answer where love comes from and what should be done with it.

Tennyson in his poem successfully describes one of the hottest themes in the narrations of humanity from even before writing existed, which is love. We can see this throughout the whole poem like in verses 11, 13 or 19 when he says deliberately the word love and he uses metaphors and the dialogue between the two voices play with the word love so he can show more easily what he understands of love.

In terms of the structure of the poem, there is only one stanza which has 20 verses. The rhyme pattern that the poem presents are 3 which in order are ABCBDBDB (verses 1 to 8) EFFB(verses 9 to 12) GBDD (verses 13 to 16) , the rest of the verses do not present a rhyme. This means that the poem presents an octave rhyme pattern followed by two quatrain rhyme.  Tennyson uses these rhyme schemes to give dynamism the poem, but more importantly what these rhymes give to the poem is musicality which is something that is directly related with the title of the poem, that's why Tennyson uses a lot of rhymes in B.

Alluding to the devices used in the poem, we can recognize metaphor (verses 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15,19, 20) personification (verse 17, 18) parallelism (verses 1 and 5, 9 and 11, 13 and 17), and others that are not as important as these ones in the poem. One metaphor of the poem that's worth to analyses is the following:

“No but the voice of the deep as it hollows the cliffs of the land”

This metaphor expresses the most important thing that Tennyson wants to establish in his poem; that love is powerful. We can assure this from the powerful and beautiful image that the metaphor provides us, which is that love is so powerful that it can hollow a cliff and land, that love is unbeatable and unstoppable.  

Also an interesting verse to analyses is the next one

“Nay let him make it his own, let him

reign in it - he, it is he”

This is a clear personification because the poet talks about love at is was a “he”. This literary device is used to show love as an entity that thinks by himself. Tennyson talks about love as something independent in a man, something that is destined to rule man because as it is said in the poem “he, it is he”, which means love makes a man what he is.

“Love that is born of deep coming

Up with the sun from the sea”

In this metaphor we can see what I said previously that love is the deepest feeling of mankind. Tennyson here is clearly appealing to the basis of romanticism by comparing the birth of love with the birth of the sun from the sea; he compares this because the sun seems to rise upon the deepness of the sea as love rises from the deepest feelings of a man.

Setting time and place

1) a) According to the text what makes this place special is that people in here don`t care about the things that are happening apart from what happens in Maycomb Country and that there is segregations between poor and rich people and coloured and white ones

b) What things I think are universal are the discrimination that happens in there. Also I think that  the way people looked at how much they earn or have before getting involved with them.

c) I think that nowadays there is less racist problems than at that time, but this doesn´t. mean there are not. But I also think people still look at the social status of a person before getting involved with them

In the last years the media have been the centre of our culture, the main canal of information in our time and, therefore, media can be considered the pillar of globalization. And for this reason many people have been asking themselves does society control the media or is the media controlling us? You may think that what you see on TV or on the newspapers may not have such an impact in your daily life or in your way of thinking, but is this completely true?; do media have this capacity to shape people according to what is the medium message? Through this essay I will be discussing the possible answer to these questions.

First if it’s true that media can control people thoughts and action in what we can see this? A clear example of the impact that the media has in us are advertisements, because advertisements are made to, to “convince” the audience that they should buy their products. But what they are really doing is controlling people thoughts by introducing in their minds catchy phrases and images that would make them buy their product. This is what ads try to do on people: that they should thing their services are the best and that they should use them, this is clearly a way where the media is controlling the way people is thinking.

Also the impact that the media has in the way that people is thinking is the news. When you see the new in TV the information that the announcer is giving is changing the way you are thinking. The human mind is like a computer, it works according to the information that it has. So when you are seeing something in the new that’s false but the news show this as something that entirely real and gives facts to give the new veracity, you as a person is going to think this false information is true and it may have change your way of thinking. Example of this is when a country is under a dictatorial government. You may be thinking what’s this has to do with media; it is visible that in a dictatorship one of the first things that the government take control of is all type of informational mediums because of the impact they have in society. In a dictatorship one of the worst things they want to have is an ideology that goes against the dictatorship this is way in this case the government censors the media and gives false news in some cases so they could shape people into what they like.

 There are many cases of people that were people that supported the dictatorship but when this government ended and they notify the abuses the dictatorships did to some people they wish they never had thought that the dictatorship was good.  A real case of this is what happened in Chile during the “Golpe de Estado” of Augusto Pinochet where many Chileans claim the dictatorial government, but they did not realized that the government was breaking the humans rights of many people along the country, as Guillermo Ramirez said to tv 13 referring to the violation of the humans right during the military government “Había gente que trabajó en el gobierno de Pinochet y nunca vio nada" “There were people that worked in Pinochet´s government that never saw nothing”.

On the other hand there you also can say that the media do not control our thought as the previous arguments said. What it is said to support this idea is that at last we are the one who decide what to think and to do, so in this case the media does not have a control of our mind because we are free to think what we want to, and if we saw an advertisement we are not necessarily going to buy this product and if we do is because we decided to buy it not cause the media told us to do it.

In conclusion after seeing the different point of view to answer the initial questions of the essay I think that the media does have a really important impact in the way society thinks. But of course I also share that we as persons have the last word, the media is huge factor to consider when we ask ourselves what the way society sees the world. So finally I can say I think that the media has the capacity to control minds.

Virginia Wolf

During the end of the 1800s in the city of London, in England, there was born a woman that would change the perspective of literature in that time. Her name was Virginia Wolf, who born in a middle class family. From the moment she was a child she felt the difference between man and women as she saw how her brothers went to school and university while she remained at home. This would make her later one of the main feminist in literature on her age.

Virginia was the centre of the modern literature (Bloomsbury), as Eliot describes in his obituary for Virginia. “Without Virginia Woolf at the centre of it, it would have remained formless or marginal…With the death of Virginia Woolf; a whole pattern of culture is broken.” The Bloomsbury Group was the literature circle that Virginia had that started meeting for ‘Thursday Evenings’ at Gordon Square, London in 1906, o later be called as the unofficial “Bloomsbury Group”.

In the literature of Virginia there was a change of the perspective of people. As Virginia said once, people in the Victorian era were different of people nowadays. That is why her stile and character had a new undertone different than the ones in her time. This happened mainly because of the influence of the end of the Victorian era and the catastrophic scenes of the First World War, adding that she had a tough childhood.

Despite these achieves obtained by Virginia Wolf she committed suicide in January of 1941. This happened because she had several mental problems that caused her being unstable mentally. This illness probably occurred because of the traumas of her childhood, the soon death of her parents and her more close brother, and also being raped by her half-brother. A sad end for a revolutionary.

Rationale

I was sitting on my desk in English classes, when my teacher started talking about the mass media and the impact of the media in our life. Then our teacher, to give us an idea of what media is she gave us some examples, between those examples she named blogs. I classmate of mine raised his hand and asked the teacher why blogs are count as mass media if no one uses them, especially young people. I was surprised with the reaction of my partner, but in a certain way I felt he was right. I didn´t know anybody of my age that has the habit of blogging. Intrigued with the blog issue, when I got home that day, I searched about the state of blogs nowadays and what I found an article that was about the decay of blogs in the society. The author of the articles said that blogs had reached their saturated point of popularity and that the main reason of the declination of blogs popularity was that the younger generations moved on to another types of media, like Facebook or Twitter (in the year 2006 a 50% of the younger users of blogs (12 to 25 years old) end up their use and accounts of blogs). Therefore, I am writing this blog entry to motivate the use of blog in young people by explaining to them the benefits, why they are useful and what the things you can do in blogs. I choose a blog entry because it represents the theme I am supporting and I also choose it cause I think a should be an example to follow for the youth, by doing a blog entry.

Blog Entry

Blog may be something odd for young people nowadays, but once it was popular for a big variety of ages. Between the years 2000 and 2006 blogs was the “gold age” for blogs, at that time blogging was something more common for the youth than what it is today. The youth of these days are not in the habit of blogging, this habit of using blogs as something common is lost in the new generation. So, why blogs loosed popularity in young people? This is because people moved on to another types of media like Facebook, Instagram, twitter, in other. One of the reasons people moved to other media was that they didn’t see any benefits by blogging so they stop using them.

There are many benefits and things that you can do in blogs the platform of blogs open you a world of possibilities. Blogs are very useful to start a business, in a blog you can build up a name for your new company. In blogs you can upload advertisements of your company and you can also make blog your company homepage or put links to yours company main page in blogs, so people can know what you company does, the services that you give and the products you have. Blogs are also useful to make insight (is when you build an emotional link between your company and the consumers). Insight is one of the best ways you can get your company known by people, insight is also useful to make people prefer your products than others, not because there are better or cheaper, but because they fell in touch with your company, that’s what insight does. Therefore, if you want to run a company blogs can make you success in easier way.

Blogs are also useful to share your personal vague. If you want to share to the world what is happening to you or what you are thinking blogs are a very viable path. In a blog you can upload whatever you like, you can make blog your personal diary or a trip dairy. If you are young and you feel that no one hears you and understands how you feel with blogs you can get in touch with people that think and feel like you. Your blog can be your way to express yourself the world. You can upload funny things, if you like writing or drawing you can post your work in your blog so people all around the world, and if your blog goes viral you can win money with it, by uploading cap chats of advertisements of companies that would pay you greats amounts of money for each visit your blog has.

If you like journalism you can blog your own news. You can make blog your “newspaper” there you can share whatever kind of news you like; you can upload news of your neighbourhood or bigger news of national or international level. The good thing that a blogs have for the writer is that there is no censorship. In newspapers there is an editor line that controls what is being published in the newspaper; instead in blog you are freer of expression. Apart of writing news you can also comment news or acts. In blogs you are free to give your opinion about the news and acts, your opinion as a common people may be interesting for the reader. Writing new in blog can open you a path into professional journalism, and it gives you a great experience of what is being journalist.

Blogs is a place where you can share your knowledge to the world. In a blog you can upload information about a scientific area. You can blog scientific articles, essays, investigations, etc. In a blog you can make a discussion of scientifically important issues. You can make your blog your personal Encyclopaedia by posting what you have been learning in classes or by yourself and then share it with your public.

Young people thing that blogs are not important in the media, but they are important. Blog is a way where the news and info are not controlled or censored, in blogs you have a free speech, so you can say thing in there without fear. Blog help “desmonopolizate” the media, so that people don´t have only one perspective of the whole story. Blogs, I think, are like the media that the people control, there is full transparency and there are no political and social differences, blogs are for everyone they are free to be used.

In conclusion there are benefits that you can get by blogging, and blog can be very useful for the youth to win money, start a company, and share your opinion or life. And that it is important for the society that the new generations are open to integrate blog to their life style, so that this important media doesn´t lose against the others media.

Activity 3.7

Make it plausible: The author writes a letter about Irish English, and he says he wrote a letter to make it more real and therefore more interesting to read.

Be knowledgeable:  The uses of names such as "James Joyce" and "J.M. Synge" shows that the author knows about the topic, also how he refers to articles of the Constitution represents his knowledge of the theme.

Keep it Relevant to Anglophone Culture: The letter and rationale are clearly referring to topic relative with the United Kingdom.

Know the right conventions for the text type: the author knows how to write a letter properly.

Panel 1

In the picture I can see the Amir spying his father and Rahim Kahn, in left size of the panel there is a staircase. Rahim Kahn, that is looking at Amir, and Baba are sitting in a blue and a green couch and they are having tea. At the back of the panel there is a golden lamp and a carpet that seems to be expensive. The light of the panel can give us the idea that it is the afternoon.

The image uses the lights to express feelings like the dark that’s surrounding Amir express sadness. Baba in the panel seems to be meditating something and he haven´t notice the presence of Amir, while Rahim Khan is surprise looking at Amir, Rahim Khan seems to be worried and at the same time sorry of what Amir had heart in the conversation that he and Baba were having.

Panel 2

There is Baba with a pipe in the hand finally noticing Amir, Amir is supported in the staircase looking at Baba, behind Amir there are some furniture like a closet and a curtain. In the picture I can see that Baba is surprised about Amir´s presence while Amir is in the back of the room surrounded by darkness his face reflects deception and sadness, he seems to be touched by something. He probably was hurt by something Baba had said.

Panel 3

Amir is running out of the house and crying at the same time, Rahim Khan stood up to follow Amir while Baba is comfortably sited in the couch. For me Amir seems to be very sad, and he can’t hold his tears and he runs because he is embarrassed. Rahim Khan seems to understand Amir feeling and he wants to comfort him. Baba seems to not care about the situation.

Panel 4

In this panel I can see Hassan and his father, which are wearing poor clothes, staring at Amir while they are working cleaning the entrance of the house. Amir is running outside of the house in what it seems to be the front garden. It is a sunny day and the entrance of the house has neat grass. The house is big, of a wealthy family. Amir is very sad and lost in his thought he has barely saw Hasan and his father looking at him.

Panel 5

The panel show us Hasan and his father. They are both holding his brooms, and at the same time Hassan´s father is holding Hassan. Hassan is worried about Amir, he wanted to go to comfort Amir but his father stopped him, in his father his expression I think what he is thinking is let him solved on his own.

Panel 6

Amir is running and Rahim is following him he tries to stop him to leave. There is just one step behind the front gate. Rahim  says that what Amir heard was no what his father meant, Rahim wants to solve this thing with Amir, but Amir things his father hates him because of his mom dying when he born. I think Rahim appreciates Amir and he take care of him and want him to be happy.

Panel 7

In this panel we can see Amir and Rahim, Rahim kneads Amir’s head. Rahim is surprised about what Amir had says he doesn’t understands that. I think Rahim is more a father to Amir than Baba because he is more close to him than what Baba is, and Baba is too rude to Amir, he demands him too much.

Universal Theme: Family


Holden learned that his sister was more matured than what he thought, and that his brother was coming to Christmas this year, for his surprise. He at first don't accept his family and says he hates his family and he says that there all phonies except phoebe, but then when he realize D.B is coming home for christmas he kind of change his mind. Also when Holden arrives to his home, he found the place so familiar and he liked that and he starts to miss his home.

Global Warming is the main environmental problem facing us nowadays?

In this essay I will be discussing if global warming is a real problem that facing us today. This is an issue very controversial nowadays in all kind of social and educational levels, such as common people, scientists, businessmen's and politicians. I will examine the arguments in favor to the motion and the ones against it. For people who don´t know what global warming is, it can be summarised in a process that makes the earth to increase the global temperature.


Firstly why this issue is considered the main environmental problem facing us today? That´s asimple question to ask, according to About News, scientific have proves that determined that humans activities have had a directly impact in the atmosphere of the planet earth, that causes that the earth temperature is increasing dramatically in the last century. So why does this represents such an important problem for the planet and the living organism, thats because this change in the temperature of the planet is can change ecosystems that normally are surrounded by woods are becoming dessert because of this change in the temperature, this also affects the agricultural crops, therefore, humans can have shortages of food. According to weather savvy, the desert Sahara has expanded 250 000 squares meters in the last 50 years. There also are people that are continuously studying the poles and they have register a step back of the pole. This are things mankind has to be worried about

In the other hand, according to Charlotte Meredith, global warming is something that we don't have to be worried about. He says global warming is just a natural change of the earth, they say the earth pass through periods of higher and lower temperature and that nowadays were are passing through a period of high temperature, and like in the Ice Age is going to pass. Another people says that the changes of temperature are to low that we don't have to be worried about it. According to Town Hall magazine said that there hasn't  been a increase in the temperature of the earth since 1997, so what the magazine is saying that if nowadays there is no global warming, of what we are worried about?

To summarise, on one side someones says that this is a big problem nowadays because is making ecosystem changes in the earth and is making the deserts to expand and the poles to melt. On the other hand some scientific says that this is a period the earth is passing through or that is to minimum to be worried about. In my opinion global arming is the main environmental problem facing us today, because there are proofs that demonstrate that the desserts are expanding and the poles melting, thats something I thing mankind must be completely worried about. To stop this I thing companies have to reduce the emissions of their factories.

Gladiator

After Maximus reveals his name to Comudus and the crowd of the Coliseum, Maximus leaves proudly the Arena saying nothing. Besides Comudus is astonished , he never expected that Maximus, the men that he ordered to kill a long time ago was there in front of him and he can’t do anything against him, because the people supports Maximus known as the Spaniard. Comudus finally leaves the Arena with the head down. He goes into the corridors of the Coliseum. He stops in front of a stone door, he opened the door and entered to a room, that has only a table in the middle and two sits. In the shadows of the room a person was waiting for the Emperor.

Comudus: ‘Hitting the table with anger’ How could this happened, I remember that I said clearly “kill him”; I felt the people and him were laughing at me, it was the embarrassing thing that had ever happened to me. And what do I have to do now? I can kill him, or else the people will hate me more than what they do now.

Adviser: My lord, I suggest you make a strategy to decrease the popularity of this gladiator. You can make bad advertising of the Spaniard, spread rumours.

Comudus: But that would not necessarily make me more popular to the people. And anyway, how can I kill him without making the people anger.

Adviser: ‘Walking around the room’ If you want to be more popular you can give away bread and other foods to the people, they would by happy with, the people is easy to satisfy. The other problem is even easier; you can challenge him to a battle that’s something he will not reject.

Comudus: But what if he kills me I can be sure that I will succeed in the battle.

Adviser: ‘Smiling’ That will be not a problem, before the battle you have to order someone to make him a lethal injury, so when he enters to the arena he will be weak and about to die, there is no a reason chance that you can lose.

Comudus: ‘Smiling with wickedness’ So what are we waiting to put out the plan.

Hunting in Africa
 Oce upon a time a short time a go, there were two friends who's names were Charlie, Jungi and Carmona. They were in a hunting trip through Africa. They were planing to stay 3 weeks in Africa hunting elefants, but they didn't knew there lifes would chance for ever because of the errrors of tecnology. As any other day the group of friends started their natural road across the sabana, of course they had a Savnat that guieded their trip. After hunting a a pair of elefants they started they way back to their hut, but their Savnat was out of battery. They couldn´t found the way of the sabana, they walked in circules.  Sudenly a lyon jumped out of now where and lethal injured Charlie, he died instantenely. In the descesperation and hungry of Jungi and Carmona they ate Charlie to survive. The days and the weeks passed a way and Jungi murdered Carmona when he was sleping and he finally ate him. The body´s of Charlie and Carmona where found 5 years later, but Jungi was never found any more. The legend says he stills lives in the sabana and he murdered and ate everybody who tries to pass trough the sabana.
